Mac dictation not working? 9 fixes
You press the shortcut and nothing happens, the microphone icon appears but no text comes out, or dictation keeps stopping mid-sentence. Work through these checks in order; most problems are fixed by the first four. Menu names below are from macOS Sonoma and later.
1. Make sure Dictation is on and check the shortcut
Open System Settings → Keyboard and turn on Dictation. Under it, look at Shortcut. The default is the microphone key or pressing a key twice, and it is easy to have changed it and forgotten. Pick one you will remember, then try again in a plain text field such as Notes.
2. Pick the right microphone
In the same Dictation section, open Microphone source. If it is set to a headset, a monitor or an iPhone that is not connected, dictation listens to nothing. Choose your Mac's built-in microphone or the mic you are actually using. Then check System Settings → Sound → Input: the input level should move when you speak.
3. Check the language and let it finish downloading
Dictation uses the language set under Languages in the Dictation settings. If you speak in a different language than the one selected, results are empty or garbled. On Apple silicon Macs many languages run on device and need a one-time download; until it finishes, dictation may not start.
4. Turn off Voice Control
When Voice Control is on (System Settings → Accessibility → Voice Control), regular Dictation is disabled. Turn Voice Control off if you only want to type with your voice.
5. Check Screen Time restrictions
On managed or family Macs, Screen Time can block Siri & Dictation. Look in System Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy → App Restrictions (or ask whoever manages the Mac).
6. Try another app
Some apps and web pages handle text input in unusual ways. If dictation works in Notes but not in one app, the problem is that app, not your Mac. Updating the app or using its web version often helps.
7. Restart Dictation
Turn Dictation off, wait a few seconds, and turn it on again. If that does not help, open Activity Monitor, search for corespeechd, select it and click the stop button; macOS starts it again automatically.
8. Check your connection
Languages that are not available on device are processed by Apple's servers. On a slow or blocked network (some company VPNs), dictation starts but returns nothing.
9. Update and restart macOS
Install pending macOS updates in System Settings → General → Software Update and restart. Dictation bugs are regularly fixed in point releases.
When it works but isn't good enough
Apple Dictation is free and fine for a few sentences. Common reasons people move on:
- It stops listening after a pause or when you click elsewhere.
- It types filler words and false starts exactly as you said them.
- It keeps misspelling the same names, product terms or jargon, because it has no personal dictionary.
- Your dictated notes end up scattered across apps with nothing tying them together.
| App | Cleans up filler words | Personal dictionary | Organizes notes | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Dictation | No | No | No | Free, built in |
| OneMax | Yes | Yes | Topics + next steps | Free 8,000 words/week; Pro $20/mo launch offer |
| Wispr Flow | Yes | Yes | No | Free tier; Pro $15/mo or $12/mo yearly |
| Superwhisper | With Pro AI modes | Yes | No | Free plan; Pro $8.49/mo |
Prices checked November 8, 2026 on each app's official site.
Where OneMax fits
Press a global shortcut in any app, speak as long as you need, and get clean, punctuated text with your names and terms spelled right. Every note also syncs to a cloud notebook, where related notes are grouped into topics over days and weeks and each topic gets next steps. OneMax transcribes in the cloud, so it needs a connection, and it requires macOS 14.4 or later.
Free plan with 8,000 words per week. Launch offer: Pro is $20 per month or $200 per year for the first 100 subscribers, locked while subscribed, with a 7-day free trial.
Frequently asked questions
Why is dictation not working on my Mac?
The most common causes are Dictation being turned off or bound to a different shortcut, the wrong microphone selected as the Dictation source, a language that has not finished downloading, Voice Control being on (which disables Dictation), or a Screen Time restriction on Siri & Dictation.
How do I reset dictation on a Mac?
Turn Dictation off and on again in System Settings → Keyboard → Dictation. If it still fails, quit the process named corespeechd in Activity Monitor (macOS restarts it automatically), then restart the Mac.
Why does Mac dictation stop by itself?
Apple Dictation stops listening after a pause, and when you switch apps or click elsewhere. For long dictation without interruptions, a dictation app that you start and stop with a shortcut works better.
What can I use instead of Apple Dictation?
Dictation apps such as Wispr Flow, Superwhisper and OneMax add filler-word removal, a personal dictionary for names and jargon, and longer sessions. OneMax also saves every note to a cloud notebook and groups related notes into topics with next steps.
