Dragon Dictation for Mac alternatives (2026)
There is no Dragon for macOS anymore. Nuance stopped selling and updating Dragon Professional Individual for Mac in October 2018, and the Dragon Anywhere phone app stopped selling in July 2026. If your old copy no longer works, or you are moving from a Windows PC to a Mac, here is what replaces each half of Dragon today.
First, which half of Dragon do you miss?
Dragon did two jobs. Dictation: you talk, text appears in any app, and it learns your names and jargon. Commands: you control the computer by voice — click this, open that, select the last sentence. No single Mac app does both as Dragon did, so pick by the job.
- Commands: use macOS Voice Control. It is free, built in, and works offline after setup.
- Dictation: use Apple Dictation for short text, or one of the apps below for long dictation with cleanup and a personal dictionary.

Voice Control — the free replacement for Dragon commands
Turn it on in System Settings → Accessibility → Voice Control. You can say "click Send", "scroll down", "open Safari" or "select previous sentence", and show numbers over every clickable item. When Voice Control is on, regular Dictation is off, so most people use one or the other.
Fits you if: You relied on Dragon for hands-free control, for accessibility or RSI.
Apple Dictation — free, fine for short text
Enable it in System Settings → Keyboard → Dictation and press the shortcut. It types into any text field and adds basic punctuation. It does not learn your vocabulary or remove filler words, which is where former Dragon users notice the gap. If it is not working at all, see how to fix Mac dictation.
Fits you if: You dictate a few sentences at a time.
OneMax — dictation whose notes turn into work
OneMax works the way Dragon dictation felt at its best: press a global shortcut in any app, speak, and get clean, punctuated text, with a personal dictionary for names, product terms and jargon. What Dragon never did is what happens next. Every note syncs to a cloud notebook, related notes are grouped into topics over days and weeks, and each topic gets an analysis and next steps that update as you add more.
Fits you if: You dictated long notes, memos or drafts in Dragon and want them organized instead of scattered.
Not for you if: You need offline dictation or voice commands. OneMax transcribes in the cloud, needs a connection, and requires macOS 14.4 or later.
Free plan with 8,000 words per week. Launch offer: Pro is $20 per month or $200 per year for the first 100 subscribers, locked while subscribed, with a 7-day free trial.
Wispr Flow — polished cloud dictation
Wispr Flow cleans up speech as you talk and works on Mac, Windows and phones, which suits people moving between a Windows PC and a Mac. Transcription always runs in the cloud. The free plan has a weekly word limit; Pro is $15 a month or $12 a month billed yearly.
Fits you if: You want the same dictation app on every device.
Superwhisper — closest to Dragon's local processing
Dragon ran on your own computer, and Superwhisper can too, with local Whisper and Parakeet models. You pick models and modes, which takes some setup. Pro adds cloud models and AI rewriting for $8.49 a month, $84.99 a year or $249.99 once.
Fits you if: Audio must stay on your Mac.
MacWhisper — for transcribing recordings
If you used Dragon to transcribe recorded audio, MacWhisper is the closest fit: drop in an audio or video file and export a transcript, processed on your Mac. Pro is a one-time €64 license.
Fits you if: You transcribe interviews, lectures or dictaphone files.

Frequently asked questions
Is Dragon still available for Mac?
No. Nuance discontinued Dragon Professional Individual for Mac on October 22, 2018, and it has received no updates since. Dragon Professional 16 runs only on Windows 10 and 11, and the Dragon Anywhere mobile app stopped selling on July 1, 2026.
What is the best free Dragon alternative for Mac?
Apple Dictation for typing text and Voice Control for commanding your Mac. Both are built into macOS and free. They lack Dragon's custom vocabulary training, which is why many former Dragon users add a dictation app with a personal dictionary.
Which Dragon alternative replaces voice commands?
macOS Voice Control, in System Settings → Accessibility. It lets you click, scroll, open apps and edit text by voice. Dictation apps such as Wispr Flow, Superwhisper and OneMax replace Dragon's dictation, not its commands.
Can I still run Dragon on an Apple silicon Mac?
Only Dragon Professional for Windows inside a Windows virtual machine such as Parallels. Nuance does not officially support that setup. Old Dragon for Mac version 6 licenses still open on some systems but are untested on current macOS.
